Laboratory research of solvent-assisted menthol sols as temporary consolidants in archaeological excavation applications

چکیده

Abstract Temporary consolidation is a quite common practice during archeological excavations nowadays. Melts of cyclododecane or menthol are among the most used consolidants. When using melting protocol to consolidate fragile heritages in archaeological excavation sites, one frequently encountered challenges poor penetration melt into heritages, especially cases low environmental temperatures, high water content compact substrates. In this work, we explore possibility solvent-assisted sols as temporary consolidant. Six organic liquids individually introduced at concentration 9.1 wt% formulate room temperature sols. Their potentials consolidants systematically investigated. Experimental data indicate that solvent polarity important feature for purpose and ethanol with medium appropriate solvents. Laboratory research results show much better behavior good performances can be achieved menthol-ethanol sol. The as-prepared sol applied Liangzhu site satisfactory outcomes. This work shows an excellent material extremely wet condition.

Collaborative Visualization of an Archaeological Excavation

We are developing a collaborative system for offsite visualization of an archaeological dig site through both virtual and augmented reality. Multiple users, wearing tracked, head-worn, see-through displays, can interact with the environment using tracked, instrumented gloves, a multi-user, multi-touch, projected table surface, large wall displays and tracked hand-held displays. We take advantag...

19 Remote Sensing Applications in Archaeological Research

The spectral capability of early satellite sensors opened new perspectives in the field of archaeological research. The recent availability of hyperspectral and multispectral satellite imageries has established a valid and low cost alternative to aerial imagery in the field of archaeological remote sensing. The high spatial resolution and spectral capability can make the VHR satellite images a ...

Multifunctional supramolecular polymer networks as next-generation consolidants for archaeological wood conservation.

The preservation of our cultural heritage is of great importance to future generations. Despite this, significant problems have arisen with the conservation of waterlogged wooden artifacts. Three major issues facing conservators are structural instability on drying, biological degradation, and chemical degradation on account of Fe(3+)-catalyzed production of sulfuric and oxalic acid in the wate...

Spatial Data Management Aspects in Archaeological Excavation Documentation1

Archaeological excavation documentation poses several challenges to spatial data management. This work gives a data model, respective query functionality and the description of the resulting prototype system for recording and analyzing the data produced during the course of an excavation. Based on a requirements analysis, we develop a data model that not only captures georeferenced finds (potte...
